The Hype Has a Grain of Truth

Every few months there's a new wave of proclamations: AI will replace writers, AI will replace analysts, AI will replace everyone. The hype is exhausting, and it obscures something actually worth paying attention to — AI tools are genuinely changing how knowledge work gets done, just not in the dramatic, apocalyptic way the headlines suggest.

I've been using various AI tools seriously for the past couple of years — not for experimentation's sake, but to understand what actually makes a difference in day-to-day intellectual work. Here's my honest take.

Where AI Tools Genuinely Help

First-Draft Generation

The single most practical use I've found is generating a rough first draft of documents, emails, outlines, and reports. The AI output is rarely good enough to use directly, but it eliminates the terror of the blank page. You react to something rather than creating from nothing — and that cognitive shift is real and valuable.

Summarization and Research Compression

If you're working through a large body of documents, reports, or research, AI tools can compress and surface the key points quickly. This works well for getting oriented in an unfamiliar topic. It works less well for anything requiring deep accuracy — always verify before relying on summaries for important decisions.

Editing and Refinement

Using AI to review your own writing for clarity, tone, or structure has become a natural part of my workflow. It's less about grammar (tools like Grammarly handled that years ago) and more about asking: "Is this argument clear? Is there a more direct way to say this?"

Where AI Tools Disappoint

Task Reality Check
Deep original analysis AI recombines existing patterns. True analytical insight still requires human judgment and domain expertise.
Local or niche knowledge For topics underrepresented in training data — including much of Central Asian and Azerbaijani context — AI is often unreliable or generic.
Long-term memory and context Most tools still struggle to maintain context across long projects. You often have to re-establish context repeatedly.
Factual accuracy Confident-sounding errors remain a serious problem. Never use AI-generated facts without verification.

The Right Mental Model

The most useful way I've found to think about AI tools is as a capable but junior collaborator — someone who can do a lot of the legwork quickly, but who needs direction, oversight, and correction. You are still the expert. You are still responsible for the output. The tool extends your capacity; it doesn't replace your judgment.

When people get into trouble with AI tools, it's usually because they've reversed this relationship — letting the tool drive rather than using it as leverage.

Practical Starting Points

If you're a knowledge worker just getting started with AI tools, I'd suggest:

  • Start with one use case where you feel clear friction — long emails, repetitive reports, research overload.
  • Use AI to accelerate tasks you already understand well, not tasks you're doing for the first time.
  • Build the habit of editing AI output critically, not accepting it passively.
  • Revisit your tools every few months — the landscape genuinely improves quickly.

The goal isn't to use AI for the sake of it. The goal is to do better work with less friction. That bar is achievable, and for many knowledge workers, it's already being cleared.
